A file upload question asks each participant for one file, such as a photo or a PDF. Use the optional reference check to compare each upload with reference images.

Add a file upload question

  1. In the study editor, click Add Question.
  2. Click File upload.
  3. Click Expected file content and describe what the file should show. The interviewer uses this text.

Limits

  • Each participant uploads one file per question.
  • The maximum file size is 40 MB.
  • Accepted types are images (JPG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, HEIC), videos (MP4, MOV, WEBM, M4V, AVI), PDF, DOC, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, CSV, TXT, JSON, and HTML.

Add a reference check

  1. Under the question, click Reference check.
  2. Type your criteria in Criteria (required). The check runs only when this field has text.
  3. Under Reference images (optional), click Click or drag media here to upload. Add up to 5 images.
The check sends the upload, the criteria, and the reference images to a model. It returns one verdict: Match, Partial match, No match, or Unclear.
  • The check reads images, PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, TXT, CSV, HTML, and JSON files. It does not check videos or DOC files.
  • If a reference image fails to load, no verdict is saved.
  • A No match verdict sets the response’s quality rating to To Review. Partial match and Unclear do not change the rating. For what To Review means for panel responses, see Fraud Prevention & Response Quality.

What participants see

Participants do not see the verdict. The upload is accepted, and the interview continues.

Where researchers see uploads

  • Responses page: the reference check verdict appears under the upload, and in a column named Q[number]: Reference check.
