# Card Sort Questions

> Ask participants to place cards into groups, then review where each card landed.

A card sort asks each participant to place every card into one group. Use it to learn how people group items, or where they expect to find things.

## Add a Card Sort

1. Open the study editor and click **Add Question** in the section where you want the question.
2. Click **Card sort**.
3. Click **Add card**, then type the text for each card.
4. Click **Add group**, then type the name for each group.

## Cards and Groups

* Cards are text only. You cannot add an image to a card.
* Each participant places each card in exactly one group.
* A card sort has no multi-select setting.
* Participants cannot add their own groups.
* To shuffle the cards for each participant, open the question menu and choose **Randomize card order**. Choose **Order cards as shown** to keep your order.
* Groups keep the order you set.

> [!NOTE]
>
> Card sorts are not available in a screening section.

## What Participants See

On a wide layout, participants see a board of cards and groups. On a narrow layout, they see one card at a time.

1. On the board, drag a card into a group. You can also click a card, then click a group.
2. On a narrow layout, tap a group to place the current card.
3. On a narrow layout, click **Undo last** to reverse the last placement.
4. Click **Next** after every card is placed.

If a card is not placed, **Next** stays disabled. Participants see this message in a tooltip: "Please place every card into a group."

## Results

Each response shows a grid. Cards are rows, and groups are columns. A filled circle marks the group where each card was placed.

## Follow-Ups

A card sort has no **Follow-ups** setting. To learn why a participant grouped cards a certain way, add an open-ended question after the card sort.
